Benefits of Himalayan Salt Lamps and How to Choose the Right One

Himalayan Pink Salt (HPS) lamps or salt lamps simply large pieces of pure Himalayan Salt with a small bulb inside. However, while their simplicity, they are packed with benefits.

Many believe that salt lamps naturally generate negative ions which neutralize positive ions like the potentially harmful ones emitted by electronic devices like computers, microwaves, and TVs.

These positive ions can make symptoms like allergies, stress, and insomnia even worse. Because salt is naturally hygroscopic, your salt lamp will attract water vapor and the things like mold, allergens, and bacteria to its surface thus removing them from the air.

Himalayan Salt is said to help such conditions as, sinus, high acidity, kidneys, poor muscle tone, high blood sugar and irregular heartbeats. Allergy sufferers are believed to benefit from breathing this naturally ionized air.

It is thought that these lamps aid in boosting the mood and increasing energy levels. It gives off a soft color that is soothing and calming. It is also a great low-light lamp for its warm, orange glow which is reminiscent to a candlelight or campfire which many find inviting.

Choosing a High-Quality Salt Lamp

The popularity of these salt lamps have risen, and it would be wise to educate yourself on how to spot good quality lamps before purchasing one. A high-quality salt lamp can last decades. The following are what you should be looking for when choosing your salt lamp:

Orange Color – Lamps that are darker in color are typically better quality. Lamps should specify that they are made with 100% Himalayan salt. Yes, cheap imitations do exist and obviously, should be avoided.

Size– The bigger the lamp, the more effective. Or rather, the larger the Himalayan salt, the better. However, this also depends on the size of the room. Refer to the following weight of the salt lamp that is ideal for the room size:

4-5 lbs. salt lamp — 8×8 sq. feet

6-8 lbs. salt lamp — 10×10 sq. feet

9-11 lbs. salt lamp — 12×12 sq. feet

13-17 lbs. salt lamp — 14×14 sq. feet

30-40 lbs. salt lamp — 20×20 sq. feet

40-50 lbs. salt lamp — 30×30 sq. feet

Surface - The rougher the surface, the better. How rough the surface determines its hygroscopic potential which determines if they are more effective at improving air quality.

Bulb– The bulb choice is crucial as the hygroscopic benefits are due to the salt and heat together. LED bulbs simply do not produce enough heat.
