Soapstone is a form of talc called steatite that has been used for thousands of years by many for the beauty of the stone and unique natural properties. Native Americans in both east and west coast travelled long miles in canoes from the mainland to obtain the soft stone, the name it’s derived from its “soapy” feel and softness. It has been used as early as Late Archaic Period (3,000 to 5,000 years ago) for cooking slabs, smoking pipes and ornaments. Soapstone has natural properties of heat conduction and retention and can resist temperatures of 1000°C.
