Stone notes

Calcite: the soft stone that builds mountains

It scratches with a knife, yet it makes up limestone cliffs, marble statues, cave formations and seashells.

Calcite is calcium carbonate, one of the most common minerals on Earth. It makes up most of limestone and marble, the stalactites and stalagmites in caves, and the shells of many sea creatures. A great deal of the stone used in old buildings is, at heart, calcite.

It is also soft. Calcite is the reference mineral for 3 on the Mohs scale, so a steel knife scratches it and so does quartz. It breaks cleanly in three directions into slanted blocks called rhombs, which is why raw chunks often have flat, shiny faces. A drop of weak acid makes it fizz; geologists use that as a quick field test.

Clear calcite does something few stones do. Lay a piece on a printed word and you see the word twice. The effect is called double refraction, and the clearest material, sold as optical calcite or Iceland spar, shows it best. Some calcite also glows under ultraviolet light, and pink mangano calcite is known for its bright pink glow.

Small amounts of other elements give calcite its range of colours, from white and honey to orange, red, pink, green and blue. For a shop, that range is the attraction. Calcite comes in large, bright pieces at a low price for its size, and it carves easily into wands, hearts, towers and spheres. The trade-off is that it needs gentle handling.

Soft enough to scratch with a knife, common enough to build the cliffs and caves around us.
About the stone

What is calcite?

Calcite is calcium carbonate, the mineral behind limestone, marble and cave formations. It is soft (3 on the Mohs scale), comes in large bright pieces and in more colours than most stones, from white and honey to orange, red, pink, green and blue, which makes it one of the best-value stones a shop can stock.

What we stock

Raw chips, chunks and boulders (orange, honey, red, rose, mangano and white), tumbled calcite, massage wands, towers, hearts and spheres, polished slices, white calcite clusters, optical calcite, and numbered statement pieces.

Handle with care

Calcite scratches easily and does not like acid. Keep it apart from harder stones, rinse it quickly rather than soaking it, and never clean it with vinegar.

Reading our titles

The letter in a title (A, B or E) is the quality grade of that lot. Chunk and slice numbers are size bands. "Unique #" or "U#" marks a one-of-a-kind piece with its own photos and size.

Mineral
Calcite, calcium carbonate
Hardness
3 on the Mohs scale: a steel knife or a piece of quartz scratches it
Colour

Quick test
Fizzes with a drop of weak acid such as vinegar (test only on an unpolished spot)

In crystal traditions

What calcite is traditionally used for

In crystal traditions calcite is a stone of clarity and fresh starts, and each colour has its own role. Orange calcite is linked with creativity and play, honey calcite with confidence, mangano calcite with kindness and blue calcite with calm.

Real, treated or fake?

  • Natural calcite colours are soft and a little uneven. Very even, saturated blue, green or pink calcite may be dyed; our titles mark treated stone "(Enhanced)".
  • Calcite and selenite are easy to confuse. A drop of vinegar on an unpolished spot fizzes on calcite and does nothing on selenite. Do not test on polished faces.
  • Real optical calcite shows a clear double image of anything seen through it. Glass and clear quartz show a single image.

Care and cleaning

  • Calcite is soft. Keep it away from harder stones in bins and bags, and wrap pieces one by one for shipping.
  • Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. Do not soak it and never clean it with vinegar or other acids.
  • Polished surfaces dull slowly with handling. A soft cloth brings some of the shine back.
  • Dust clusters with a soft brush or a camera air blower.

How shops sell calcite

  • Orange and honey calcite give the most colour per dollar on a crystal shelf. Big chunks at low prices are an easy add-on.
  • Optical calcite is a natural gift for kids, teachers and science lovers. Show the double-image trick and it sells itself.
  • Pair massage wands with a short care card. Customers who know calcite is soft come back happy.
  • We stock Blue Calcite meaning cards in 10-packs. A card with each stone turns a small purchase into a gift.

How to display calcite

Calcite sells on colour and size. Give it light, give it room, and keep it away from the hard stones.

  1. Build a colour runWhite, honey, orange, red, pink, green, blue. A rainbow of calcite chunks along one shelf is one of the strongest displays in a crystal shop.
  2. Show the double imageLay a piece of optical calcite on a card printed with a single word. Customers try it, smile, and buy.
  3. Keep soft and hard apartCalcite scratches against quartz and jasper. Give it its own bowls and shelves, and add a small "soft stone, handle gently" note.
  4. Light the big piecesLarge orange and honey chunks glow when a lamp or window lights them from the side or behind.
Questions

Calcite FAQ

Why does calcite scratch so easily?

Calcite is 3 on the Mohs hardness scale, so steel, glass and quartz all scratch it. That is normal for the mineral, and it is why it is so easy to carve.

Can calcite go in water?

A quick rinse is fine. Do not soak calcite and never use vinegar or other acids on it; acid dissolves calcium carbonate and dulls the surface.

What is optical calcite?

Very clear calcite, also called Iceland spar. Because of double refraction, a line seen through it appears twice.

Is mangano calcite the same as rose quartz?

No. Mangano calcite is pink calcite coloured by manganese, softer than rose quartz (3 against 7), and it glows pink under UV light. Rose quartz does not fizz in acid and is much harder.

Is orange calcite natural?

Yes, the orange colour is natural. Our orange calcite comes from Mexico and Brazil, and the title says which.

What is the difference between calcite and selenite?

Calcite is calcium carbonate and fizzes in weak acid. Selenite is a form of gypsum, softer still, and does not fizz. Selenite also dissolves slowly in water.

Can I buy calcite without a minimum order?

Yes. There is no minimum order. Approved wholesale customers see their wholesale price on every product once signed in.
