Buying guide

Gemstones for jewellery makers

This is the maker's shelf: stones that are ready to set, wrap, drill or string. Cabochons (smooth domed stones) and faceted gems go into settings; drilled stones and points take a jump ring or wire; slices and electroplated leaves make statement pendants; cords and findings finish the piece.

Choosing stones

Check the size in millimetres or carats in the title, and the photos for shape. Faceted and cabochon stones are sold by size band, so pieces in one listing are similar rather than identical.

Treated materials

Electroplated leaves are natural leaves coated in metal, and some stones are enhanced. Both are marked in the title so you can describe them to your customers.
