Rose quartz: why the pink is so soft

Rose quartz almost never grows as crystals. It forms in solid masses, coloured by fibres far too small to see.

Most coloured quartz gets its colour from atoms inside the crystal. Rose quartz is different. Studies have shown that its pink comes from microscopic fibres of another mineral, related to dumortierite, spread through the quartz. The fibres also scatter light, which is why rose quartz looks slightly hazy and soft rather than glassy.

Rose quartz usually forms as solid masses in pegmatites, coarse granite-like rocks, with no crystal faces at all. Well-formed pink crystals do exist, but they are rare collector pieces. The massive habit is good news for carvers. Rose quartz comes in big, solid blocks that can be cut into spheres, hearts, towers and bowls.

Brazil and Madagascar supply much of the world's rose quartz, with more from Mozambique, South Africa and India. The colour runs from almost white to a deep pink, and a deeper, more even pink earns the higher grade.

Strong sunlight can fade it over time, so the classic advice holds. Show rose quartz in good light, but keep it out of the afternoon sun in a window.

The pink in rose quartz comes from mineral fibres far too small to see, not from the quartz itself.
About the stone

What is rose quartz?

Rose quartz is the pink form of quartz, the same mineral as clear quartz and amethyst. It is hard (7 on the Mohs scale), takes a high polish and comes in large solid pieces, which is why it is carved into spheres, hearts and towers more often than almost any other stone.

We stock it in every form a shop needs: tumbled stones for the counter, hearts and palm stones for gifts, polished spheres and towers for display, rough chunks for bowls and gardens, and numbered statement pieces and boulders for a window. Every numbered piece is photographed on its own, so you get the piece you see.

Pink stones

Rose quartz or something else?

Several pink stones end up in the same bowl. This is how to tell them apart.

MineralHardnessHow to tell
Rose quartzQuartz7Soft, slightly hazy pink; stays cool in the hand
Mangano calciteCalcite3Pale pink with white bands; fizzes in weak acid; glows pink under UV

Real, treated or fake?

  • Natural rose quartz is slightly cloudy and the pink is soft and uneven. Very even, candy-bright pink usually means dye or glass.
  • Glass imitations often show round bubbles and feel warm quickly in the hand. Quartz stays cool longer.
  • "Cherry" or "strawberry quartz" with red flecks in clear material is usually man-made glass.

Care and cleaning

  • Strong direct sun can fade the pink over time. Keep window displays out of full afternoon sun.
  • Wash with lukewarm water and mild soap; dry with a soft cloth.
  • Rough edges on chunks can chip; wrap pieces separately when you ship them.

How shops sell rose quartz

  • Spheres and hearts sell best on a raised stand at eye level, grouped by size so the price ladder is obvious.
  • Keep a bowl of tumbled rose quartz at the till. It is the easiest add-on in most shops.
  • Pair it with amethyst and clear quartz as a three-stone set; the colours sit well together on one shelf.
  • Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and wedding season are the busy weeks. Order a few weeks ahead.

How to display rose quartz

Rose quartz sells as a gift. Make it easy to pick up and easy to compare.

  1. Raise it and light itSpheres on stands at eye level, lit from above. Warm light makes the pink glow; cold light makes it look grey.
  2. A size ladderLine spheres and hearts up from small to large so the price steps are obvious.
  3. Hearts by the tillSmall hearts and tumbled rose quartz are easy add-ons, especially in the weeks before Valentine's Day and Mother's Day.
  4. Shade from the windowKeep rose quartz out of strong afternoon sun, which can fade it slowly.
Questions

Rose Quartz FAQ

Is your rose quartz natural?

Rose quartz is natural pink quartz, polished or left rough. If a stone in our shop is enhanced or man-made, its title and description say so.

Why does some rose quartz look paler than the photos?

Natural colour varies from piece to piece and from lot to lot. Photos of numbered pieces show the exact item; bulk listings show a typical piece.

Can I buy rose quartz without a minimum order?

Yes. There is no minimum order. Approved wholesale customers see their wholesale price on every product once signed in.

Does rose quartz fade?

It can fade slowly in strong direct sunlight. Indoor light is fine.

Why is rose quartz cloudy?

The pink comes from microscopic mineral fibres inside the quartz, and those fibres also scatter light. A soft, slightly hazy look is normal for natural rose quartz.

Is rose quartz ever dyed?

Dyed quartz and pink glass are sometimes sold as rose quartz. A very even, candy-bright pink or round bubbles are warning signs. Dyed or man-made stones in our shop say so in the title.
