Sleep Better, Travel Safe with White Moonstone

White moonstone has been regarded as a stone of love, hope, purity, and intuition since ancient times. It emits an energy so calming that it encourages rest, empathy, and acceptance. Because of its oozing calming energy, white moonstone is used to improve sleep quality and lucid dreaming.

In this post, we detail the properties of white moonstone and why you should use it in your crystal practice.

The Physical Properties of White Moonstone

Moonstone is a potassium aluminum silicate feldspar that comes in shades of white, yellow, peach, pink, reddish, gray, green, and brown. It shares the same colour patterns with other stones but moonstone's unique shimmer distinguishes it from the rest.

Moonstones are popular for their optical property called adularescence, a bluish sheen below the stone's surface. This happens when light is reflected between the layers of albite and orthoclase within the stone.

It has a Mohs hardness rating of 6-6.5. This makes moonstone a soft material prone to cracking and cleaving when exposed to extreme pressure. So it should be stored in a hard case and must be cleaned using warm and soapy water. (READ: The Proper Way to Care for Your Gems and Preserve Their Quality)

White moonstone is often used as a gemstone material for rings, earrings, necklaces, pendants, and other jewellery items.

The History of White Moonstone

It was Pliny, a Roman natural historian, who gave the stone its name when he wrote about how moonstone changes its iridescent appearance with the phases of the moon.

For many years, white moonstone was believed to be connected to the moon and its energy. The Romans linked the stone to Diana, the goddess of the moon, and they believed it was the solidified form of the moon's rays.

Moonstone became popular during the Art Nouveau (1890-1910) when jewellery designers used the stone in custom-made pieces. It became a sought-after stone until the 19th century Arts and Crafts era. It would become a staple stone in hippies' accessories and in the New Age movement in the 1960s and the 1990s respectively.

Moonstone is found in Brazil, India, Madagascar, Norway, Sri Lanka, and the USA.

The Lore of White Moonstone

Many cultures saw moonstone as symbolic of the divine feminine energy. In Hindu tradition, moonstone is considered the crystal of love and feminine traits. It is said that women in Arabic cultures would sew the stone into their garments as it is believed to stimulate fertility.

Moonstone carries the lunar energy. It maintains man's connection to the moon and it lends humans the protective energy of the moon. This is why moonstone is a talisman for travellers. Carrying or wearing a piece of moonstone is believed to protect travellers from harm.

This stone is also used in interpreting dreams and stimulating lucid dreams. Moonstone will aid you in getting a clearer understanding of your dreams and how they relate to your subconscious mind.
