The Physical Properties of Brazilianite

Brazilianite grows as elongated and prism-shaped crystals in phosphate-rich pegmatites. The crystals are dark yellow green to olive green, measuring 12 cm in length and 8 cm in width.

In terms of hardness, brazilianite is rated 5.5 (moderate hardness) on the Mohs scale. It has a perfect cleavage, is brittle, and forms a conchoidal fracture when broken. Brazilianite is a translucent to transparent crystal with a vitreous luster. It is a great gemstone material that makes for fine jewellery pieces.

Brazilianite gems require great care. While it’s tough enough to withstand pressure, brazilianite tends to fracture. It also loses its colour when exposed to heat as high as 140º C/284º F. So keep your brazilianite gem in a hard case and use a soft brush and warm water when cleaning it. Occasional wear is necessary to preserve the quality of your gemstone.

The History of Brazilianite

This phosphate mineral was discovered in 1944 in Divino das Laranjeiras, Minas Gerais, Brazil. At the time of its discovery, it was falsely identified as chrysoberyl because it shares the same colour and structure as the mineral.

In 1945, American mineralogist Frederick Harvey Pough and chemist-geologist Edward Porter Henderson officially recorded brazilianite as a new and different crystal. It was them who named the crystal after its country of origin: Brazil.

This eye-catching yellow-green crystal typically occurs in granite pegmatite, specifically in the cavities of pegmatite where beryl, mica, and quartz also grow. Aside from Brazil, this mineral is also found in Australia, Canada, China, France, Czech Republic, the US, and Rwanda.
