The Physical Properties of Red Jasper
Jasper is a cluster (or aggregate) of microgranular quartz and/or cryptocrystalline chalcedony and other minerals. It's an opaque silicate crystal that occurs in red, brown, green, yellow, and blue colours. The red-orange to brick red shade of red jasper is produced by the presence of iron (III) inclusions in the stone.
With a hardness rating of 6.5-7, jasper has a glassy appearance and breaks with a smooth surface. It is popularly used as a gemstone or an ornament. Jasper can also be highly polished, making it an excellent material for vases and snuff boxes.
Jasper may be a hard and durable stone, but it's still prone to damage. So to preserve its sheen and appearance, only use warm soapy water and a soft cloth when cleaning your jasper stones. Dry it completely. Store it in a hard case.
Avoid wearing jasper jewellery when playing sports or doing any activity that causes you to sweat. Jaspers are [porous] and therefore easily absorb liquid. If your stone becomes dirty, clean it right away to preserve its colour.
The History of Red Jasper
The name jasper comes from the Greek word iaspis which means spotted/speckled stone. Red jasper has a single colour, which is unlike other jasper varieties that have banded patterns and colours.
In some cultures, jasper is seen as a symbol of power, abundance, and status. Ancient Egyptians used jasper as a jewelry material while the Minoans used jasper to make seals. Red jasper is found in different parts of the world, particularly in the deserts of Australia, rainforests of Brazil, the wet sands of Madagascar, and even in the wildlands of the USA.
The Lore of Red Jasper
Red jasper has been considered a stone of healing for many years. Magicians and scribes use it as a talisman. Warriors would wear or carry a red jasper stone to battle for protection and for healing (red jasper is believed to have connection with blood).
In Vikings history, it is said that Siegfried (or Sigurd) the Dragon Slayer embedded red jasper in his sword. He did this to toughen himself up, boost his courage, and to defeat monsters. The Bible also states that Aaron, the first high priest, ornamented his breastplate with jasper stones.
Native Americans took to red jasper to reinvigorate their health and stimulate spiritual rebirth.
