Zincite: The Blood Red Mineral that Inspires Courage and Action

Zincite: The Blood Red Mineral that Inspires Courage and Action

The mineral variety of zinc oxide (ZnO), zincite is a rare mineral found in metamorphosed limestone and zinc ores. It occurs in small, distinct crystals dispersed in matrices ranging from 3 to 4 inches long. It can also grow in large masses weighing several pounds.

The Physical Properties of Zincite

Zincite has different colours depending on its mineral inclusions. Most crystals in the market are blood-red to brownish red due to the mineral's iron and manganese content (like the notable ones found in Franklin and Sterling Hill, New Jersey), although zincite can also be a rich yellow, orange-yellow, white, or colourless.

Due to its rarity, zincite is grown artificially. It's also a by-product of zinc smelting and is formed by adding iron and manganese to a zinc ore. Zincite is a soft mineral (with a hardness rating of 4) so it's difficult to cut and polish.

The History of Zincite

This mineral was named red oxide of zinc by Archibald Bruce, an American mineralogist in 1810. It was renamed zincite in 1845 by Austrian mineralogist Wilhelm Karl von Haidinger. The major source of natural zincite is the Franklin and Sterling mines in New Jersey, where zincite is found together with willemite. The deposit is believed to be a source of zincite since the Proterozoic era or some 1.5 billion years ago.

In the early days of crystal radios, natural and synthetic zincite were used as semiconductor crystal detectors. It was used together with galena, lead sulfide mineral and an important source of lead and silver.

Zincite is also an important ingredient in sunscreen. Among the many expert-approved sunscreen ingredients, zincite offers the most number of benefits.

Besides New Jersey, USA, Zincite is also found in Poland, Italy, Namibia, Spain, and Tasmania.
